Have you ever looked at the back of a taco seasoning packet? Some of them have corn maltodextrin, silicone dioxide, natural flavors… and other ingredients that I don’t feel is healthy or necessary in such a simple blend of seasonings. It’s the convenience that keeps these in our spice cabinets, but I think the healthier alternative is just as easy.
This year my family has had to look at our food a little bit closer and try to make some swaps. I still need the convenience but prefer to skip the added stuff that doesn’t even make my food taste any better. Once you try your own, you will see that all of the extra things they add don’t make it taste better.

What You’ll Need:
Container– Roughly 16 ounces, either plastic or glass will do as long as it is airtight. I use mason jars, but you could even recycle an old spaghetti sauce jar. I do that often for my savory spice mixes.
Fresh Ground Spices– Buy them in bulk if you can. I have several grocery stores near me that carry bulk foods and they also have a great spice section. If that is not an option, just look for the most affordable. It doesn’t take anything special to make your own spice blends. The most important thing is skipping the additives and fillers.
Labels– You’ll be seeing a lot of my spices so be sure to label your jar with the name and date. If this is kept in a cool, dark, and dry environment it will last up to a year if you don’t use it all up by then. I love my little Dymo Label Maker. I use it for SO many things not just in my kitchen but all over my house. My daughter even uses it to organize her room and school supplies.
I like to make my own spice mixes and I enjoy seeing them in the pretty jars with neat labels. It’s such a simple thing to do but it makes me feel accomplished and organized.
